Most people definitely know when Christmas
is coming, but having a little numbered door to open each day to reveal a prize
certainly makes the holidays a little more fun! Here is a little history about
Advent calendars (especially for us Americans!) and some great ideas for how
you can make your own.
What is Advent?
Advent a the four-week period beginning on November 30 which has been celebrated since the fourth century. Advent, which derives from the Latin word for “coming,” celebrates anticipation of Jesus Christ’s birthday.

What are Advent Calendars?
Advent calendars are cardstock boxes with
paper doors that open to reveal an image, Bible verse, or piece of chocolate.
Most Advent Calendars begin on December 1 and mark the 24 days before
Christmas. The tradition dates to the mid-19th century, when German Protestants
made chalk marks on doors or lit candles to count the days leading up to
Christmas.
