After
your gel manicure, use gloves when cleaning!
It might sound super obvious, but if you
wash the dishes or clean your house and strong chemicals find their way onto
your nails, it can damage the gel and cause it to chip or peel away.
On
that note, just avoid all hot water!
If you’re having a really hot bath or
shower, try to keep your nails out of the water and especially avoid soaking
them. It can weaken and damage them, eventually leading to early chipping or
peeling.
Use
top coat of nail varnish after a week to prevent any chips.
It might sound weird but using a normal
lacquer clear coat on top of your gel can help prevent any unwanted chips
appearing.
Camouflage
growth
Most gel nails grow out pretty quickly,
when you begin to see the nail near your cuticle grow out, cover it with
glitter nail polish and disguise any growth until you’re ready to go back to
the salon.
Never
ever, ever peel off your gel polish!
Peeling it off damages your natural nail
bed really bad. There are many ways to remove it without peeling, such as soaking
your nails in acetone (https://www.allure.com/story/how-to-remove-gel-manicure-without-ruining-nails)
or using an e-file (link to our youtube
video being uploaded really soon).
To remove:
File the top layer of gel polish off thoroughly before you apply acetone
You’re told to ‘file’ or ‘buff’ before you
put cotton-soaked acetone on your nails and wrap it. However, our nail
technician told us if you’re going to soak off your polish, be sure to put some
elbow grease in first to really remove as much of the top layer of gel as you
can with a hand file (doesn’t apply to removal by e-file).
When filing, file only in one direction.
That might sound weird and feel unnatural
to what you’re used to, but if you’ve ever had your nails done at a salon or by
a technician, you’ll see they never file back and forth, it damages the nail!
File in one direction only to prevent splits, breakage and weakening of the
nail.
Remove your cuticles thoroughly! Practice makes perfect
It’s important you don’t apply gel polish
over your cuticles because they will grow out and the gel won’t last half as
long as it’s supposed to. Practice soaking them in warm water, pushing them
back, cutting them off or even using ‘cuticle removal cream’. Do what you can
and spend a decent amount of time to have a clean and clear nail beds that are
prepped for gel polish application!
