7 Chemicals you Do NOT Want in your Gel Nail Polish

Thanks to the increased availability of home nail drying lamps, many of us have come to rely on gel polishes for our nail color. Who doesn’t love beautiful nails, right? But do you know exactly what ingredients are contained in your favorite gel polish, and what potential health risks they may pose?
In this post, we’ll tell you about seven common chemical ingredients that are definite no-no’s in a good gel polish.

-     Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a common plasticizer and potential carcinogen (cancer-causing agent). DBP has also been linked to birth defects in animal studies, and can also cause malformations of embryos. Avoid, particularly if you are pregnant or planning to have a child.

-     Toluene is a used as a solvent and has the all-to familiar (and stinky) smell of paint thinner. You can be exposed to toluene by breathing it in or getting it on your skin, causing skin irritation.  Breathing large amounts of toluene can damage to your nervous system may cause light-headedness and nausea.  Toluene is a toxin that may also cause birth defects and developmental problems in children of pregnant women who have had extended exposure.

-     Formaldehyde is a commonly used chemical to preserve and embalm dead animals (and humans). Yuck! Its vapors are also irritating and can trigger asthma.  Formaldehyde is also known as a carcinogen for humans.

-     Formaldehyde Resin (TSFR) is a derivative of Formaldehyde, mainly used in the production of coatings and adhesives.  It is not as toxic as Formaldehyde but can be an allergen. Better to leave it out than in, we think.

-     Camphor is added as a covering layer for nails, but it can actually deprive them of nutrients and cause yellow staining on your nails. When encountered in large doses, it may also cause seizures and disorientation, much like your grandmother’s fruitcake.

-     Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP) is a chemical used in plastics to improve flexibility and as a flame retardant. It’s been shown in animal and in-vitro studies that it can be disruptive to your hormones and can potentially affect reproductive health and lipid metabolism. Besides, do your nails really need to be fireproof anyway?

-     Xylene causes irritations to skin, eyes, and respiratory tracts. It is toxic if ingested or inhaled.  If inhaled in large doses, it may harm your central nervous system, resulting in headaches, dizziness, ataxia, drowsiness, tremors, and even comas. It has other health consequences as well, including ventricular arrhythmias, acute pulmonary edema, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, and reversible hepatic impairment. Even if you don’t know what all of those mean, you can probably tell that they are bad.

We don’t want to scare you here, but it’s important that gel polishes are safe as well as beautiful. No manicure, no matter how gorgeous, is worth unnecessary health risks.

Choose a natural gel polish if possible. MelodySusie Party Queen 1-Step Gel is free from these and any other harmful chemicals. We use water, natural resin, and natural plant paste as the main ingredients in our formula. Be pretty, be healthy.
