Valentine’s Day is
only about a week away. While you might be occupied with great date ideas, this
is also a good time to ponder your current (or future!) relationship and the
role it plays in your life. It’s all too easy to take our relationships for
granted without thinking honestly about them. Here are five things to look for
in a healthy, productive relationship.
1. You
have shared values
Nowadays, many
people equate the world “values” with a boring, uptight, attitude. But everyone
has values; they are how we understand life and the world around us. Values
range from the “big things” like religious or political beliefs, all the way
down to who should do which chores. You and your partner don’t have to share
the exact same ideas and opinions, of course, but it’s essential that you both
have some core values in common.
2. You
listen to each other
In any
relationship, communication is key. Communication is not about talking; it’s
actually about listening. Listening and understanding another person’s
perspective is easier said than done, and it requires tremendous patience
between partners. How many problems between people could be solved or avoided
if we could only communicate more clearly with one another? If you two can
listen sincerely to each other’s needs, thoughts, and concerns, you can nip a
lot of potential problems in the bud.
3. You accept
each other for who you are
No one is a
perfect person, and no one is a perfect partner. We all have our flaws and
weaknesses which we could stand to improve upon. We’re messy, we have no sense
of direction, we burn the scrambled eggs—we all struggle to be the best version
of ourselves on a daily basis. If we can apply that knowledge of ourselves as
empathy towards our partner, we can begin to accept them as they are today,
faults and all.
4. You plan
for the future
Living in the
moment is great for a passionate start to love, but it’s usually not
sustainable for a long-term relationship. Whatever your future plans may be in
terms of family, career, and life, it’s a good sign when you begin to see your
partner as key part of them. If that’s the case, make sure the two of you
discuss your possible future together. Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in
our own hopes without considering our partner’s.
5. They
know your heart’s desire
Understanding one other’s
favorites is a sign of a deep connection. Of course, it also makes shipping for
gifts a snap! In a long-term relationship, it’s still important to frequently
show your partner that you care, and vice versa. Even something small can
rekindle the fire of a slightly cooled relationship.
